All aboard the Pitfest Express!
Erica is a small village, with a history in peat digging. To honour those times, there is a museum called “Smalspoormuseum” (Narrow-Gauge Museum). All about the narrow-gauge trains that transported peat. We support the village and its history and unique things. So: as a Pitfest vistor, you can join the experience through a journey by narrow-gauge train. From our festival terrain, you can go for a trip through a beautiful area, largely on an original route, formerly used for peat transport.
During the ride, regular stops and explanations are given about the narrow gauge railway and the specific area, where more than seventy species of birds occur and nowadays grows peat moss. The area is part of Geopark de Hondsrug, which has had the status of UNESCO Global Geopark since 2015.
Due to the low speed, so characteristic of this narrow gauge railway, you have enough time to enjoy the surroundings and the train journey. Along the route narrow-gauge material is set up in various compositions and applications.
The journey also leads you to the peat bedding factory, with the associated unloading installation. It is the only preserved peat factory in The Netherlands.
In the peat litter factory, which is open for visitors, you can still find the original production machines. Here you get an impression of the former production process of peat litter.
The 4-track narrow gauge railway was also built on the museum grounds in 1910, which served as a workshop for the museum for years. Both the peat litter factory and the depot are National monument.
The museum, which runs entirely on volunteers, has a large collection of narrow-gauge locomotives, wagons, tools, photographs and other materials.
Camper/Caravan tickets are officially SOLD OUT! We managed to creat a little more space on our camping ground, so that means we have a few extra camping tickets available.
